Megan Valzonis continues her Motherhood in Sport series with a powerful look ahead—this time focusing on her future in elite competition. As an Olympic-level athlete and expectant mother, Megan shares her evolving mindset as she prepares for the next chapter: returning to high-performance training while embracing the profound changes of motherhood. This post captures both her drive to compete and the deeper meaning behind her pursuit of the 2028 Games.
Coming off a high-intensity Olympic training block and then competing at the Games, I’m feeling deeply motivated to return to the high-performance environment. My husband and I talk regularly about what my return to play will look like—not locking in plans, but preparing mentally and emotionally.
The thought of representing my country gives me chills. But doing it in front of my family—my husband and our son—takes that feeling to a whole new level. Competing at the highest level and then stepping off the field into their arms brings such deep purpose to the work ahead.
Reaching 2028 as a Mom
It’s not going to be easy, but I’m ready and willing to put in the work. The dedication and discipline I’ll put in over the next few years will make that moment on home turf in 2028 even more meaningful. Pregnancy has already shifted my view on sport. I can’t wait to see how that evolves once our son is in our arms.
