The Erin Matson Internship Program at Longstreth will commence in the Fall of 2026 and will be open to a high school senior, preferably with a field hockey background, interested in or pursuing a degree in Journalism (other areas of interest can include Marketing and Communications). While the role centers on creating content and coverage for Longstreth, a defining part of the experience is the opportunity to work directly with Erin Matson—head coach of UNC Field Hockey—who will partner with the intern throughout the program to shape story ideas, sharpen their writing, and offer mentorship that’s rare to access this early in a career. This position is remote with defined weekly deliverables.
- Exceptional writing and grammar skills with the ability to convey complex ideas in a clear and engaging manner
- A genuine passion for writing and storytelling, and a desire to refine these skills
- Strong attention to detail and a commitment to delivering error-free content
- 8-10 hours/week, paid internship.
- Weekly meetings with VP, Marketing to review current and future projects.
Responsibilities to include:
- Create engaging articles, blog posts, and marketing materials around the sport of women's field hockey, athletes, and teams at every level of play.
- Collaborate with the Longstreth team—and work directly with Erin Matson—to brainstorm ideas, conduct interviews and research, and hone writing skills.
- Produce high-quality written content, including marketing materials, website copy, and short articles, to support Longstreth's communication and marketing strategies.
- Review and edit work for clarity, grammar, and consistency to maintain a high standard of written materials.
- Assist in creating engaging social media content and captions to promote written materials and engage with our online community.
- Two writing samples are required with the application.
- Interest in content creation and experience is a plus.
Signature Experiences:
- Game Day Media Experience: Attend a UNC Field Hockey game in person with credentialed media access—including the press box, post-game press conferences, and a behind-the-scenes look at how professional sports coverage comes together—experiencing it alongside Erin’s program and then filing a game recap or feature on deadline, just like a working reporter. Travel stipend provided where applicable.
- Letter of Recommendation: At the conclusion of the internship, Erin Matson will write the intern a personal letter of recommendation or LinkedIn testimonial—whichever is more valuable to their next step.
Position reports to the Vice President, Marketing at Longstreth. Cross-functional collaboration and communication are required.
