The Rhode Island Division III State Championship featured a matchup between Smithfield High School and Classical High School. This game was a unique one in that no goals were scored in regulation, overtime, or double overtime, meaning the result was decided in a shootout.
Goalkeeper Mia Howard of the Smithfield Sentinels shut down her opponents and Camylle Ursillo came up with the goal to give the Sentinels the State Championship victory.
Classical High School outscored Smithfield 11-3 in three regular-season games, and though offensive chances were limited for the Sentinels, Howard remained strong and poised in the goal, denying each and every opportunity for Classical until they won.
Smithfield’s most recent title came in 2013, and their fantastic play this season has marked the only winning season since then, though they hope to keep the victorious momentum moving forward.
