Last week’s Previewed Game:
Oak Knoll (#15) vs. Emmaus (#11)
Result: The underdog of this match, Emmaus, pulled out the victory with a 2-0 win over Oak Knoll! Emmaus got off to a good start, with sophomore Gracie Huffer and senior Emmy Horner scoring within the first 20 minutes of play. Both goals were assisted by sophomore Sadie Nawarnyski – these young contributors are showing us why the team has no worries heading into the season with just two seniors! (Sadie is also amongst the top scorers in the country right now, with 18 goals on the season). Oak Knoll was able to get 6 shots off, almost equal to Emmaus’ 7, but was unable to capitalize and ultimately the 2-0 score at halftime lasted through the final whistle.

Featured Recap:
Broadneck High School (Maryland, ranked #7 in the Mid Atlantic Region) took on Crofton (Maryland, ranked #5 in the Mid Atlantic Region) in a huge rivalry match on September 10th.
Though Crofton High School just opened in 2020, and had their first true field hockey season in 2021, they made a statement right away and have taken the Anne Arundel County field hockey scene by storm. 2021 was their first 3A season, and in 2022 they won the Maryland 3A State Title. In 2023, they moved to 4A, and beat Broadneck - the defending 4A champions – in State Finals. Broadneck had handed Crofton their only 2 losses of the 2023 season prior to that state final game.
It’s been a great rivalry over the first few years of Crofton’s existence, and when asked about the program becoming successful so quickly, Broadneck’s Head Coach, Shannon Hanratty (Maryland/ DC & Mid-Atlantic Coach of the Year, 2022), stated: “Every coach in here Anne Arundel County knew they’d be good immediately! The Crofton rec feeder is one of the strongest programs and they used to feed into South River- but now they all feed into Crofton High School.”
In this year’s matchup, the Broadneck Bruins were able to avenge their 2023 finals loss with a 2-1 win over Crofton. The Bruins overcame a 1 goal deficit with goals from Raleigh Kerst and Faith Everett, while Crofton’s lone goal was scored by Sophia Galaza. The pressure was definitely on, as the Crofton keeper, Ryleigh Osborne, made 20 saves in the game! Broadneck is off to a strong start otherwise, as well, as they boast a 2-0-1 overall record and 1-0 in conference record to start the season.
