Scoring the game-winning goal in the state championship is every field hockey player’s dream, and it’s a dream that Smyrna High School senior Bree Moffett got to live out on November 8. Thanks to her outstanding performance in the Delaware Division I State Championship and her incredible success throughout the 2025 season, we are proud to announce that Bree is this week’s Player of the Week!

Bree has been playing field hockey for as long as she can remember. Her mom, Loveita Moffett, played at the University of Michigan and first introduced Bree to the sport when she was only three years old. Bree fell in love with the game and has not put down her stick since! She also credits her parents with fostering her passion. Speaking about them, Bree says, “Both of them have always encouraged me to ensure my practice and preparation aligned with the goals I set for myself.” For the Moffetts, field hockey is more than just a sport; it’s a unique form of connection that brings them together. This closeness helped Bree stay motivated as she worked toward her goals in high school and beyond.

This year, Bree and her Smyrna team set out to win the program’s first state championship. She knew it was a daunting task, and to accomplish it, she and her teammates kept each practice focused and intense. As a captain, Bree led her team to “push one another and play at game-level pace at all times.” Their hard work paid off in big ways, as Bree and her team won both the Henlopen Conference Championship and the Delaware State Championship, both in dramatic overtime fashion.

Bree described her overtime experience as “surreal,” recalling, “Every player on the field was exhausted but still giving their all.” As the clock ticked down in the second overtime period, Bree spotted an open space in the circle. She attacked with speed, gathered a rebound off the goalie, and cracked a reverse shot into the bottom right corner of the goal. As soon as the ball hit the backboard, the entire Smyrna team dog-piled on top of Bree, pure joy on all their faces. She described it as “one of her best field hockey memories.”

Now that the season is over, Bree is looking forward to finishing her club career and starting a new chapter with the Northwestern field hockey team in 2026. She will also attend the U18 National Team selection camp this December, where she and 80 other talented athletes will compete for a spot on the Junior National Teams. While these challenges will be significant, Bree’s relentless work ethic and love for the sport, combined with her family’s support, will no doubt lead her to success in whatever she chooses to pursue.
