This week, we will be continuing our coverage of recently crowned state champions. Today, we are featuring teams from Colorado, Delaware, and Virginia!
Colorado
Colorado may not be known for their extensive high school field hockey scene, but the few high schools that do offer field hockey certainly make the CHSAA hockey tournament one to watch every year. This year, it was Cherry Creek High School that came out on top, following a 3-2 defeat of Kent Denver. The match was fiercely contested, and the two squads needed extra time to determine who would take home the title of state champion. In the end, it was Hazel McDonnell’s golden goal 25 seconds into overtime that sealed the game for Cherry Creek. The team finished at 17-2 and is now back-to-back state champions.
Delaware
Delaware’s storied history of exciting state championships continued in 2025, with two extremely tight contests to close out the Division 1 and Division 2 tournaments. In Division 1, it was Smyrna High School that edged out Cape Hennepin High School 1-0 in double overtime. Senior and Northwestern commit Bree Moffett scored the lone goal to lead her program to its first ever state title. In Division 2, Wilmington Friends School shut out Newark Charter School 2-0 to take home the championship. Both of these matchups were gritty and intense, and showcased the skill and passion that is synonymous with Delaware field hockey.
Virginia (Private Schools)
The VISAA state tournament is an opportunity for private schools across the state of Virginia to compete for a state title. In the VISAA Division 1 bracket, national powerhouses Trinity Episcopal School and Collegiate School faced off in the title match. Trinity goalkeeper Avery Johnson faced the daunting task of keeping top-ranked Collegiate forward, Alexandra Curtis, off the scoreboard. It was a tense match, but Trinity was able to pull through with a 5-2 victory.
In Division 2, Fredericksburg High School took on St. Anne’s-Belfield’s talented team. It was a back-and-forth match, but St. Anne’s could not find the back of the net, and Fredericksburg came out on top by a margin of 2 goals to 0.
