As we reach the midpoint of October, high school field hockey teams across the country are beginning to hit their stride. Electric matchups are happening nearly every day, but this week, no region has shined brighter than Massachusetts. While it may not be the first state that comes to mind as a field hockey powerhouse, Massachusetts teams are proving they have what it takes to compete on the national stage.
At the top of the Massachusetts rankings, two undefeated teams are battling for the No. 1 spot. Currently, Phillips Academy Andover holds the top position in the regional rankings, powered by the dynamic senior duo of Maren Boyle and Lucy Parker. Both are committed to play field hockey at Boston College for next fall. Hot on their heels is Uxbridge High School, a small regional school with a massive field hockey legacy. Uxbridge is coming off an incredible run, having won four straight state championships. This season, their offense is led by Junior National Team member and Maryland commit Kendall Gilmore, while their defense is anchored by Wake Forest commit Amelia Blood.
Uxbridge boasts an 11-0 record, recently securing a commanding 6–1 win over defending Division 1 State Champions, Walpole High School. So far this season, Uxbridge has outscored their opponents by a staggering 89–4. Their sights are set on an unprecedented fifth consecutive state title. Phillips Academy, meanwhile, has also been dominant, outscoring their opponents 50–2. However, they’ll face a real challenge on Wednesday, October 15, when they take on fifth-ranked Middlesex School.
Walpole High School is another standout team and perennial contender with 14 state titles to their name. Despite a lone loss to Uxbridge, Walpole is having a strong season with a 12–1 record. Their recent performances have been especially impressive, including a 7–0 win over Milton and a 14–0 rout of Weymouth. Currently ranked fourth in the state, Walpole is determined to claim a 15th title. Led by senior and VCU commit Kendal Cusack, they’ll be a team to watch as the postseason approaches.
In the National Top 25, Massachusetts makes two appearances, with Phillips Academy at #13 and Uxbridge at #25. These two powerhouses are bringing attention to the immense field hockey talent in Massachusetts, and we look forward to watching them and the other Massachusetts field hockey teams as the season continues to unfold.
