As we head into October, the number of elite teams and thrilling matchups continues to grow across the country. Rivalry games are lighting up the schedule nearly every day, but this week, Pennsylvania stands out for its depth of talent and standout teams.

Top Teams Battle

Last week, National #1 Notre Dame Academy faced off against #2 Villa Maria Academy in a highly anticipated showdown. Both teams were dominant at the National High School Invitational, with Notre Dame outscoring its opponents 14-1 and Villa Maria earning an impressive 412 win over #8 West Essex (NJ). Each team also placed two players on the All-Tournament First Team, highlighting their individual and collective excellence.

On September 23rd, the top-ranked teams met on the field in a thrilling, back-and-forth contest. Notre Dame’s Kiera Sack and Maeve McGinley controlled the midfield and drove the attack, while Villa Maria’s Caitlin Connell capitalized on breakaways with quick stick skills and clinical finishing. Ultimately, Notre Dame secured a 4-2 win, maintaining their top spot, but Villa Maria made a strong case that they’re closing in. As the Irish continue their undefeated campaign, their eyes remain fixed on another state championship.

Sue Butz-Stavin Reaches 1,100 Wins

Legendary coach Sue Butz-Stavin of Emmaus High School has reached yet another milestone. In her 39th year at the helm, she led the Hornets to a 14-0 start, including a marquee win over #9 Oak Knoll. That victory wasn’t just another notch in the win column. It was also Butz-Stavin’s 1,100th career win, a feat unmatched at both the high school and collegiate levels. No other coach has surpassed 900.

A 2002 inductee into the NFHCA Hall of Fame, Coach Butz-Stavin continues to define sustained excellence. She has inspired generations of athletes while pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in the sport and works hard to grow the game of field hockey nationwide.

Looking Ahead

More marquee matchups are on the horizon for Pennsylvania field hockey fans. On October 1, Notre Dame Academy will clash with #4 The Hill School in a rematch of last year’s state championship. The next day, #3 Episcopal Academy hosts Villa Maria in another can’t-miss showdown. Episcopal is led by standout senior Rebecca Block, while Villa will look to Caitlin Connell to lead the charge.

No matter the results, these upcoming games promise to be some of the most competitive and exciting of the season; you won’t want to miss them.

Take a look at how these teams, and others across the country, are ranked in the latest Max Field Hockey National/Regional Team Rankings.
