Last week’s previewed game result:

#2 (MID) Archbishop Spalding (MD) vs. #5 (MID) Garrison Forest (MD)
Archbishop Spalding took on Garrison Forest, on October 22nd. This is a historically intense game between two rival teams, with Garrison Forest coming out with the Conference Championship the last two seasons.

Spalding took the victory this time, with a 1-0 win against GFS – and therefore secured the IAAM top seed. Coach Leslee Brady, who has coached Spalding to 359 wins since taking over the program in 1998, plans to retire after this season, making this matchup the last regular season game of her legendary coaching career.

Senior Skyler Gilman scored off an assist from Junior Ella Jane Ostrowski early in the second quarter. This lone, early goal secured the 1-0 win and the No. 1 seed for Spalding going into the conference tournament – the Cavaliers aim to win their first championship since 2021.

Garrison Forest played a great defensive game; despite Spalding earning 5 corners in the second half, GFS kept them from increasing their lead. Likewise, Spalding’s defense, led by Jilly Lawn and Stella Bumgarner (a group that has allowed just 1 goal in the last 5 games) held the Grizzlies off to keep that one goal lead.

Best of luck as they begin IAAM Conference play

Preview of Next Week’s Featured Game

Sanford vs Thornton Academy

Sanford, 10-4 on the regular season, takes on Thornton Academy, 9-4-1 on the regular season AND one of the first schools in the state of Maine to offer field hockey (in the 1940’s!) on October 29 at 6pm in the Quarterfinal round of the Class A Playoffs in Maine! These teams with nearly identical records have played once already earlier this season on September 10, when Sanford came out with a 4-0 victory after scoring one goal in each of the 4 quarters.

Coach Kane from Sanford says that “Tonight’s matchup will likely be won by the team that controls the midfield and is best able to keep possession of the ball”. She highlights key players for Thornton; Cora Bolduc, Shyla McVeigh, and Goalkeeper Allison Marines, and cites top contributors for her own program as Audrey Payeur, Hailey Payeur, Paige Sevigny, and Goalkeeper Megan Sheppard.
The winner of this match will continue on in playoffs to the Semifinal game of the Class A State Championship! Check back next week to see who advanced!
