Emily Snowden founded The Goalie Trainer, renowned for its specialized coaching facility serving goalkeepers of all ages and skill levels. Goalies from across the country travel to train with Emily and her staff. She proudly trains athletes who have been selected to represent many collegiate institutions, as well as USA field hockey developmental and junior national teams. As the co-lead educator and featured speaker at the 2024 NFHCA Annual Convention, Emily showcased her mastery through a podium presentation and on-field demonstration to more than 200 college coaches!
What made you want to specialize in goalie coaching?
As a student-athlete at the University of Vermont, I was looking for opportunities to grow and develop. As a goalie, I realized there was a shortage of opportunities for consistent, specialized goalie training in the US. After working with Martijn Driver in the Netherlands for numerous summers, I realized the potential for a regular GK specialist facility and training environment. Thus, The Goalie Trainer was born.
Favorite skill/drill to teach?
Anything related to decision-making. I want goalkeepers to play with confidence! Training when to use particular skills can unlock a new level of performance where goalkeepers are able to anticipate and execute their skills at a higher level.
What is your coaching style?
Positive, challenging, affirming, and inquisitive. This approach challenges athletes to think critically in the moment regarding their actions, decisions, and overall performance.
Goalkeeping is a very individualized position, and mistakes by goalies are usually punished on the scoreboard. As a result, I try to challenge athletes to let go of a mistake, not compound it. Rather than providing direct answers, I foster autonomy, self-awareness, and problem-solving skills.

Plans for the next 3-5 years - where do you see yourself?
Currently, The Goalie Trainer is working with more than 70 goalies on a weekly basis. We also offer semi-regular clinics and seasonal camp opportunities, impacting dozens more goalies each year! The community of goalies and coaches that we have built up around the country is amazing! Next up? I hope to deliver more coach education and double the opportunities for more goalies to continue to access our high-level specialized training!
